Taking Up Space: In our inner and outer worlds
When we feel comfortable, at ease, and able to take up space in the world:
Or
When we feel small, scared, or unseen; when we hesitate to speak, ask, create, lead, or take up space in the world:
What is taking up space within us?
What might we be resisting making space for?
How do our surroundings and community influence it?
Throughout our lives, we learn what it means to take space - for ourselves, for others, for what we desire, and for what we are becoming. We also learn to constrict, contain, accommodate, and hold ourselves back. It can show up in subtle internal ways, and it can show up in something as tangible as a slouched back or sitting pretzel legged.
This day invites us to explore making space and taking space as both inner and outer practices, through embodiment, reflection, yogic philosophy, and creative inquiry.
Rather than asking us to become bigger, louder, or more visible, this is an invitation to become more available to ourselves - and from there, to discover what it means to inhabit our lives more fully.
What would it mean to take up space in the world not from a place of authority, force, or performance, but from a deeper sense of belonging?
Who Is This For?
This gathering is for anyone who has ever experienced a sense of being too small for the space they’re in - or not quite sure they’re allowed to take up space at all.
That experience can have many roots. It may be shaped by gender, identity, race, class, financial circumstances, family or cultural conditioning, our bodies, our relationships, or experiences that are harder to name.
Sometimes we know exactly where the message came from. Sometimes we simply carry its imprint.
Maybe you’ve learned to be quieter, more accommodating, less demanding, or easier to be around. Maybe you hesitate to speak, ask, create, lead, take up physical space, or express what you really want. Or perhaps there is simply a subtle sense that there should be more room for you than you’ve been allowing yourself.
You don’t need to have a clear explanation or identify with any particular experience to belong here. If you’ve ever wondered what it might feel like to take up a little more space in your own life, this gathering is for you.
